I was sitting on a sofa in a shopping centre, doing my Duolingo. A girl stopped next to me and watched me attentively for a few seconds. She made a gesture with her hands, and smiled before leaving.

Sofas in the upstairs of Centro Comercial Martianez in Puerto de la Cruz. This is the place where the story happened. The people in the background have nothing to do with the story

I was sitting on a sofa in Martianez shopping centre. Three people walked by: a mother, a father, and a daughter, I assume. The adults were speaking to each other and walking slowly. The girl — she was maybe 3 or 4 years old — stopped and watched me very attentively for a few seconds. Then she moved her hands like she was making a big stomach to herself, smiled, and walked to her parents.
The gesture seemed very innocent to me. I didn't feel like she would have been mocking or criticising my appearance. It was more like if she was saying in her mind something such as: "Wow, what a belly!"
I rarely get comments about my stomach (which I have to admit is rather sizable) from strangers. And if I get, they are rarely this positive. I think I smiled too when the girl left.

The author admits that he has maybe a bit too much stomach and it would be good to lose a bit of it (even if it gets positive attention from some little children). |
